So I got that 3G iPhone

2008.9.12

As mentioned a while back, I got fed up with the marketing and hype around the iPhone. Trying to counter any argument with the Apple fanboys quickly resulted in arguments like "But you haven't tried it yourself. You wouldn't understand".

So when I was offered one for free, I signed up to see what the fuzz was all about.

Now I have that new, shiny iGadget and have been using it for about a week, and I must admit, I love this thing. I might have a phone which automatically labels me as a trend-whore. I might have a piece of equipment which in some circles is considered "ghey", but I don't care.

I love this silly thing. Consider my old HTC S730 ditched. In fact, despite the phone only having 16GBs of storage, I'm also considering dumping my old 80GB iPod and just stick to the phone alone, having no separate portable music-player. In fact, I guess I already have.

Only thing I miss is the full qwerty keyboard my old phone had. When trying to do any kind of typing the onscreen keyboard, despite fixing obvious typos, really doesn't come close. But when not spending your time typing stuff, this thing just kicks ass!

Short list of cool I like about the iPhone:

  • Multitouch rules. End of story.
  • Safari is a pretty decent browser. Not perfect, but I'm still thinking this might be one or two notches better than Opera mobile as far as visuals are concerned.
  • Gmail IMAP support out of the box. Even for my Gmail hosted domains. No crappy Java-client needed.
  • Despite my initial scepticism towards the AppStore, I must admit that after trying it I kinda like the thing.

So far the following applications are on my must have list:

  • The iTunes WLAN remote control: Basically making my phone the coolest music-remote I have ever had.
  • Shazam: Finds out what music you are listening to, when you have no idea yourself. Cool stuff.
  • Remote Desktop: Geeky as heck, but really, I can't have a phone which supports remote desktop and not install it. Now I can reboot my Windows Servers remotely, from the phone, should I ever need to ;)

So yeah. I like it. Any other iWhores out there with suggestions for applications I should pimp up this baby with?
